He attended Oskaloosa College for a while but left in December 1878 to go to work. Joe worked most of his life for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railway — first as a "helper" at Rose Hill, 1879; then as a night telegraph operator at Marengo, Iowa, 1879; as a regular telegraph operator at Colfax, Iowa & Malcolm, Iowa, 1879; operator at Grinnell, Iowa, 1879–80; agent at Atalissa, Iowa & Kellogg, Iowa, 1881–87; agent at Beatrice, Nebraska, 1887–90; then as a traveling freight agent, 1890–93; and as commercial agent at Wichita, Kansas, 1893–99. Davidson County?, North Carolina [Regan, Descendants of Johann George Meir, Sr., p. 5]. Died 8 February 1865 in Mahaska County, Iowa [Biographical Album of Mahaska County, Iowa].

Mary probably was the sister of Nancy Ledford, but I haven't yet found proof of this. . . .

[unknown compiler, Census NC 1786 Surrey County, Capt. Wright's District, p. 2, col. 1.]

He appeared on the census of 1820 "Lexington side", Rowan County, North Carolina:

     Myers, Peter
          Males: 10-16 - 1          Females: over 45 - 1
                   over 45 - 1

Children of Peter4 Myers and Eve Hepler (see #9), all born in Rowan County [the part that subsequently became Davidson County], North Carolina, were as follows:

  •    i. Johann Georg3 Myers; born 9 December 1775; married Nancy Ledford (probably the sister of Mary) [Oahler group sheets, 19 August 1986; Regan, Descendants of Johann George Meir, Sr., p. 5].

A variant surname for Eve that appears in some indexes is Heckler. She may be the daughter of Philip & Catherine Elizabeth Hepler/Heckler of early Rowan County. (Her name is also sometimes rendered in the family as "Helper," but this seems to be a simple spelling error as the Helpers were a completely different, well-documented family.)

10. John4 Ledford. Born before 1780? probably in North Carolina. Married Molly —(?)— (see #11) before 1798 (in North Carolina?).

Known children of John4 Ledford and Molly —(?)— (see #11) were:

11. Molly4 —(?)—. Born before 1780? probably in North Carolina. Married John Ledford (see #10) before 1798 (in North Carolina?).

Generation Five

16. Christian5 Myers (Johann, #32). Born 1730 in Baden-Würtemberg. Married 1st(?) Catherine Margaret —(?)— (see #17) c1750 in Würtemberg. Married 2nd(?) Hannah —(?)— after 1760. Died after 1799? Rowan County, North Carolina. [Regan, The Descendants of Johann George Meir, Sr., p. 2; Gladfelter File.]

NOTE: There's another "Christian Myers" who wrote a will on 19 March 1812 in Davidson County, North Carolina. He mentions his wife, Hannah; his sons, Daniel and Andrew; his daughters, Catherine, Elizabeth, Eve, Charity, Delia, and Barbara; and his stepmother, Catherine Myers. (Executors: Joseph Evans and Alexander Calddaugh. Witnesses: Michal [sic] Sappenfield, Michael Sink.) He mislead me for some time, but this appears not to be my Christian. . . .

Known children of Christian5 Myers and Catherine Margaret —(?)— (see #17) were as follows:

  • 8 i. Peter4 Myers.

  •    ii. Sybilla Magdalena Myers; born 23 April 1752 in York County, Pennsylvania; married John Sink Sr, son of Jocob Zinck and Derrodea Derrode(?), c1773 in Davidson County, North Carolina; died circa 1821 Rowan County, North Carolina [Regan, Descendants of Johann George Meir, Sr., p. 4].

17. Catherine Margaret5 —(?)—. Born 1730-1735 in Würtemberg. Married Christian Myers (see #16), son of Johann Georg Meier and Sybilla —(?)—, c1750 Württemberg (his 1st wife?). Died 1780-1790 in Davidson County, North Carolina.

Generation Six

32. Johann Georg6 Meier. Born c1700? in Baden-Würtemburg. Married 1st(?) Sybilla —(?)— (see #33) c1720? in Würtemburg. Married 2nd(?) Catharine —(?)— after 1740. Died after 23 August 1799 in Rowan County, North Carolina. [Regan, Descendants of Johann George Meir, Sr., p. 1; Linn, Rowan County, North Carolina Will Abstracts, p. 77.]

The more common and modern spelling of the surname is Myers. "Johann Georg Meier" is included on a list of 265 Palatines (though he was a Würtemburger) who arrived at Philadelphia 25 November 1740 on the Loyal Judith, commanded by Capt. Lovell Painter. It's not clear whether all his children accompanied him on this original voyage.

He was one of the elders of the German Reformed Church in York County.

He wrote a will on 23 August 1799 in Rowan County, North Carolina, in which he mentions his wife, Catharine; his sons, Christian, John, George, John Jacob, Peter, and Charles; and his daughters, Susanna, Margaretha, Catharina, and Sarah. (Executors: John Charles Irwin, Michael Meyer, wife Catharina. Witnesses: Gottlieb Shober, Joseph Essig, Nathan Shober. [no probate date].) [Linn, Rowan County, North Carolina Will Abstracts, vol. 1, p. 77.]

Children of Johann Georg6 Meier and Sybilla —(?)— (see #33) were as follows:

  •      i. Johann Georg5 Myers; born c1727 in Würtemburg; married 1st(?) Catherine —(?)— before 1748; died 1806? in Rowan County (the part that is now Davidson County), North Carolina [Regan, Descendants of Johann George Meir, Sr., p. 2].

  • 16 ii. Christian Myers.

  •      iii. Maria Sarah Myers; born 1731 in Würtemburg; married Felix Clodfelter, son of Johann Peter Glattfelder and Salome Amberg, c1748 York County, Pennsylvania; died 23 November 1813 in Davidson County, North Carolina; buried in Bethany Reformed Church Cemetery, near Midway, Davidson County, North Carolina [Regan, Descendants of Johann George Meir, Sr., p. 3].

  • Apparently, Sarah and Felix migrated to Rowan County, North Carolina between 1763 and 1768.

  •      iv. John Myers; died after 1799 North Carolina? [Linn, Rowan County, North Carolina Will Abstracts, p. 77].

  •      v. John Jacob Myers; died after 1799 North Carolina? [Linn, Rowan County, North Carolina Will Abstracts, p. 77].

  •      vi. Peter Myers; died after 1799 North Carolina? [Linn, Rowan County, North Carolina Will Abstracts, p. 77].

  •      x. Catharine Myers; died after 1799 North Carolina? [Linn, Rowan County, North Carolina Will Abstracts, p. 77].
